Power BI Free Training (Pivot & Unpivot Transformation of Columns in Power Query Editor Class - 3)

Pivot & Unpivot Transformation of Columns in Power Query Editor

Yes! Yes! Yes! You can make a Pivot table in Power query too. In this webinar, we will discuss Table transformation of Pivot to the Unpivot table. Yes, we have to convert the cross tab table to an Unpivot table to make reports. Let's Discuss Why we need to change with a couple of examples.

No summarise report, not a chart can be made with the Pivot table / Crosstab table. If you have a 90-degree table as a source you must convert it to unpivot first like shown in the image.

I hope you find the difference. See the webinar.

Power BI Free Training (Power Query for beginners) Transpose Table Class - 2

Transform Table or Column

Table Transformation

It is a very easy and important option given to make the table more interactive. there are some tools like Transpose and Group by is playing a major role in the table.

Transposing a Table is the same as Microsoft Excel in Power Query but slightly different. In Excel, the source table transpose but in Power Query transposing will be done in the data model only not with the source. See the image below for what is the mean of transpose the table.

Transpose Table
Group by feature is just like a Pivot table. it formulates group by aggregate ( like sum or count ) based on other columns.

Columns Transformation

Pivot & Unpivot Columns: There are only two ways to keep data in the table. It is a pivot table or Unpivot table.

This process is the first footsteps, it is a very easy procedure to connect data in Power Query. Just click to a new data source in Power Query. See images below
Steps to connect data source
Get Data
Power query saves the data source as a Query or Command (M language). we can extract more than one query in a report no matter whatever base source is.
and later we can append merge or combine it for desired results.

Combine File Query

Merge (Similar to Joins)
  • Merge Query
  • Merge Query as New

Append (Similar to Union)
  • Append Query
  • Append Query as New

Query Type
  • Query as REFERENCE
  • Query as Duplicate
